Ryan Moore falters in the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship – Golf News
Ryan Moore faltered in the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Country Club to stand tied for the fifth position on Sunday, May 6, 2012.
Moore, who was amazing in recording an opening round score of seven-under par 65 to take the lead, failed to card enough number of birdies in the final round.
Through 11 holes, he managed to record 10 par shots against a lone bogey. He carded another bogey on the 12th hole to go two-over for the round.
The only birdie of the day came at the par-five 15th hole that was offset by the third and final bogey on the 17th.
According to many commentators, a penalty stroke during the second round of the event jeopardized his confidence for the next two rounds. If the incident had not happened, the whole story would have been different.
“Well, today I got a penalty stroke for absolutely no reason, so that was unfortunate in the middle of the round there,” he said after he was penalized by one stroke on Friday.
“But I was able to make another birdie or two after that. It was just a solid day. This is not an easy golf course, and just didn't quite hit it as close and didn't make as many putts”.
He did make a good comeback on Saturday, as he carded a four-under par 68. However, he could have been in a better position while entering the final round on Sunday if he had avoided the penalty.
The other two players to join him on the leaderboard were Lee Westwood and Ben Curtis.
Both the players really had some impressive show of skills in the final two rounds to record six-under and five-under par score respectively.
In the meantime, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and DA points tied for the top position after carding a 14-under par tournament score each.
Therefore, the game slipped into the sudden-death playoffs where Fowler defeated his rivals with a birdie on the first extra hole to hoist the trophy for the first time in his career.
