Ryan Moore shares first-round lead at the Wells Fargo Championship
Ryan Moore fired a seven-under par 65 in the opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, to share the three-way lead on Thursday, May 3, 2012.
He started off on the back nine of the course and carded birdies on the first two holes that he played.
After the nine holes, he had a three-under par score. Later, he carded five birdies against a bogey on the front nine to surge to the top of the leader board.
The highlight of his performance includes three back-to-back birdies to end his round, which played a key role in helping him earn the first-round lead.
“It was really a good, solid round all day long,” he said. “I just had a great finish. I hit it where I was trying to hit it all day long and made some good putts early in the round and made some great par savers on my first nine to kind of keep my momentum
going. I played solid right into my back side and just had a great finish”.
In the meantime, Stewart Cink carded a bogey-free round with seven birdies in total to join Moore on the top.
The third player to record the same score was Webb Simpson. He recorded a total of six birdies and an eagle against a bogey to go seven-under par 65.
Simpson recorded the longest putt of his career at the 12th hole when he succeeded in making a 62-foot, seven-inch birdie putt.
“I obviously knew how difficult it was, and I was just trying to get it within six, seven feet of the hole, and it looked pretty good, looked pretty good, and went right in, and we had a good laugh over it. It was a nice moment,” he said.
John Senden, D. A. Points, Brian Davis, Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed were tied for the fourth place, as they all carded a six-under par 66 each.
The defending champion, Lucas Glover was tied for the 80th position after recording an equal-par score on Thursday. He mixed three bogeys with one birdie and an eagle.
