Ryan Moore to ride Theysken’s Theory at Ascot
Ryan Moore’s slim chances of retaining his jockeys’ title slipped from his grasp when he slipped from his horse at Windsor in August.
The jockey, who missed more than three weeks with a wrist injury, has done his best to make up for lost time and now picks up a plum spare ride at the expense of another jockey who has been put on the sidelines.
Martin Dwyer, who was taken to hospital after a fall at Leicester on Tuesday, has been found to have broken his right thumb and a bone in his left elbow and will be out of action until the end of the turf Flat season.
Dwyer, who has been re-establishing himself as a freelance after giving up the role as second jockey to owner Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum, will now miss the ride on Classic hope Theyskens' Theory in the Group One Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile at Ascot on Saturday among several other good rides.
Brian Meehan, trainer of the filly, has booked Moore as Dwyer’s replacement. Speaking on his website Meehan said: “Martin’s injury means that riding plans for our horses in the major races at Ascot have been revised. Richard Hughes will ride Happy Today in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes on Saturday and Lady of the Desert in Sunday’s Diadem Stakes. Ryan Moore comes in for the ride on Theysken’s Theory in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies’ Mile on Saturday.”
The main race on Goodwood’s card tomorrow is the Listed Mouton Cadet Classic Foundation Stakes, which has attracted a field of five including Bullet Train. Henry Cecil’s colt has finished out of the places in three runs since he won the Lingfield Derby Trial in May but is closely match on ratings with both Holberg and Hot Prospect.
One horse who will not be seen at Goodwood is Illustrious Blue, who had been due to gallop before racing.
Illustrious Blue has won seven times at Goodwood during his career including this season’s Group Two Artemis Goodwood Cup at the Festival meeting. The seven-year old is being prepared for a tilt at Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 2nd, and will remain in Australia after that run having been sold to Australian owners.
The horse’s trainer, William Knight, has decided not to go back his favourite course and said: “I’ve decided not to go ahead with the racecourse workout at Goodwood tomorrow. I’ve had a think about it and I don’t think it is necessary to take him away for a racecourse gallop. I will work him at home instead.
“The horse has to travel up to Newmarket on Thursday to go into quarantine for Australia and going to Goodwood the previous day could have made it all a bit unsettling for him.”
