Ryan Perry falters as Detroit Tigers lose 3-7 in eleventh inning of Game 2 – MLB Playoffs
Detroit Tigers’ Ryan Perry received a lead off grand slam in the bottom of the eleventh inning to put his club into a 3-7 loss in the second outing of the seven-game American League Championship Series against the Texas Rangers at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington,
on Monday, October 10.
The right-hand pitcher relieved Jose Valverde to pitch the eleventh inning and gave three straight singles before serving a game-ending grand slam to Nelson Cruz. Perry, 24, threw 13 strikes of 20 pitches, but he yielded four hits. He allowed a hit to each
batter he tossed which resulted in his first post-season loss with an extremely high 21.60 ERA.
Valverde served the bottom of the ninth and forced the game into an extra inning with 3-all on the board. Right-hander continued pitching the tenth and took out the strong Ian Kinsler, Elvis Andrus and Josh Hamilton, giving another chance to his batters.
Tigers’ batting line-up struggled against the Rangers’ Neftali Feliz in the tenth and then against Mike Adams in the top of the eleventh inning.
Detroit wasted many chances to score, including an early chance in the first, then a crucial one in the second, ninth and eleventh. With two on and none out in the first inning, Delmon Young popped out to second, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez grounded
out. Ryan Braun and Brandon Inge were occupying third and second base respectively while Austin Jackson was on first in the top of the second, but Ramon Santiago grounded out at second into fielder’s choice.
With a 3-3 score on the board, Ramon occupied third, Don Kelly and Miguel Cabrera were on second and first base respectively, when Victor Martinez gave an easy pop out hit to short-stop.
"We didn't quite get it done," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "We haven't been able to come up with any big hits. That's really hard. We've had some opportunities, but up to this point, we just haven't been able to do that."
The Tigers’ three runs came off Ryan Raburn’s 383-feet long hit out of the park in the top of the third inning. It was his 14th home-run of the season.
Detroit is now under a 0-2 deficit and the fans’ expectations have arisen. A young and energetic Rick Porcello will lead the Tigers in the third outing.
