Ryan Raburn’s grand slam helps Detroit Tigers defeat Chicago White Sox 7-3 – MLB Update
Ryan Raburn hit a stunning grand slam on Sunday, June 5 to help Detroit Tigers win an impressive 7-3 victory over Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, Chicago.
Raburn’s hit came at a time when the Tigers were down 2-0 with Chicago appearing to be set for a tough competition. Jake Peavy, who allowed six runs in the fourth inning, was relieved after having reported to be plagued by a strained right groin.
Peavy’s physical injury aside, the mental distress Raburn’s hit has caused must be far greater. Having virtually proved to be the backbone of his team, Raburn is looking for something greater. "I'm getting close," he said. "Consistency is still not there
but I feel a lot better and as long as I can keep getting that one hit, hopefully it will turn into two or three hits."
The White Sox had a seemingly strong start on Sunday when the game kicked off. Paul Konerko doubled to left when Brad Penny came out to pitch and scored the first run for the White Sox. Brent Lillibridge doubled the lead as he enabled Carlos Quentin to score.
While Jake Peavy was pitching scoreless innings, maintaining his team’s 2-0 lead over the Tigers, everything turned upside down in the fourth inning when the Detroit came forward with a six-run fourth inning.
After Victor Martinez and Andy Dirks scored a single each on a struggling Peavy’s fastballs, Raburn added to the woes of Chicago with a gigantic hit, a grand slam, which not only stunned Peavy, but also the overly enthralled crowd.
Raburn’s grand slam was no less than a sudden psychological edge for the Tigers and an equally nerve-wrecking moment for Chicago. Gordon Beckham tried to minimise the magnitude of damage done by Raburn, as he homered to left to bring the score down to 6-3.
“That's what we're working hardest on is getting runners in when we get the opportunities," Raburn said. "Fortunately for me, it went over the fence ... but I definitely would have taken a single."
However, Miguel Cabrera homered to left centre in the sixth inning to give the Tigers a 7-3 lead that Detroit’s pitchers successfully defended up until the end of the game. The strong innings by the pitchers gave a comfortable 7-3 victory to the Tigers and
a 2-1 win to the team against the White Sox.
