Ryan Sermona collects impressive fifth round knockout win over Roberto Gonzales - Boxing News
Ryan Sermona, the surging Filipino proud, grabbed his career’s first title and became the IBF Pan Pacific Youth super featherweight champion after nailing fellow countryman Roberto Gonzales, in a 10-round bout held on May 13, 2012.
Sermona achieved his career’s milestone feat by knocking Roberto out in the fifth round in the ring set up at Puerto Galera situated in Mindoro Oriental, Philippines. The bout headlined the event whereas the non-title flyweight bout between Lolito Sonsona
and Albert Alcoy co-headlined the pay-per-view.
This was Ryan’s very first title bout and as per some analysts the experience for the 24-year-old did not go that well. During the whole bout it was Roberto who stunned, rattled and gave a true tough time to Ryan.
Ryan was entering in his career’s 16th bout and boasted 12 wins. He has nailed six of his opponents by knockout and was on a two-bout win streak since his last loss to Nam-Joon Lee.
His Sunday night opponent, Roberto, 21, was in his 21st career bout. The young lad boasted an undefeated streak and was coming from a technical knockout win over heavily experienced Dante Paulino.
Gonzales, also known as the ‘Calibre’, has nailed 11 of his opponents by knockout and was also just like Ryan entering in his first ever title bout. As far as the technical facets and stats are concerned, Gonzales had a clear upper edge over Ryan.
In addition to the better knockout and win ratio, Gonzales also had the height and therefore the reach advantage at his disposal. The bout kicked off and from the very first second, Gonzales aggressively moved in attacking Ryan wildly and connected a huge
number of left-right combinations.
Roberto fully capitalised his height advantage and threw well-targeted jabs from a considerable distance. Due to this reason Ryan was unable to connect any of his hooks. Moreover, Gonzales’ battering was so lethal and swift that in the third round Ryan received
a deep cut over his right eye.
The gushing blood covered Ryan’s face within seconds but the 24-year-old did not lose hope and presence of mind and continued to defend himself. From the beginning of the bout, Roberto’s stance exhibited that he is going for an early knockout win but nobody
knew that his strategy will eventually backfire.
In the fifth round, due to the initial heavy pounding Roberto started to get sluggish and the defensive Ryan started capitalising the deficiency. Sermona then adopted the role of the aggressor and mauled Roberto so much so that with a left-right combination
Roberto got stunned and almost dropped his defence.
Ryan immediately availed the opportunity and threw a mind-jolting jaw-breaking fist that flattened Roberto on the ring floor. The bout referee moved in and halted the bout eventually declaring Ryan as the IBF champion.
With this win Roberto has unfortunately received his first ever loss and Ryan has grabbed his very first title along with his career’s 13th win.
