Ryan Sweeting, Sam Querrey move into semi-final – Tiburon Challenger 2011
Top seeded local, Ryan Sweeting survived a mid match lapse against fifth seeded Canadian Vasek Pospisil in their quarterfinal match at the 2011 Tiburon Challenger in California, U.S.A. The pair battled for nearly two hours, before
Sweeting was able to move into the last four with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win.
Meeting for the first time ever in their career, the hard hitting youngsters were flying in blind unaware of their opponent’s skills or tricks. Pospisil won the toss and opted to serve first, comfortably making it onto the scoreboard.
Riding the local support, Sweeting reeled off the next three games as he broke the Canadian in the third game to secure a 3-1 lead. A successful hold of serve later, Sweeting was still leading the set 4-2. Determined to make it a quick win, the local once
more broke the Canadian youngster to go 5-2 in the set before serving out the set with much ease, clinching a 6-2 win.
Down but definitely not out, Pospisil bounced back in the second set. Matching blow for blow, Pospisil returned the favour as he clinched an early break for himself to lead the score 3-0. A successful hold of serve from the pair
and an exchange of breakpoint opportunities put the scoreboard at 5-2 win Pospisil’s favour. Although Sweeting held his serve in the eighth game to reduce the deficit he failed to make any impact as the Canadian served out a 6-3 victory to bring the score
to even terms.
A set win a piece forced the match into the decider. Refocused and backed by the local crowd, Sweeting came out firing in the third set securing an early 4-1 lead. Breaking Pospisil for the last time in the match, Sweeting went
5-1 in the lead before clinching a breadstick win on his serve in the seventh game.
A marginal 66 percent win on his first serve mixed with five aces and three double faults, allowed Sweeting to do away with the Canadian and secure a berth in the final four. The local now moves on ahead to play his third seeded
compatriot, Sam Querrey.
Querrey cruised through his quarterfinal match as he secured a simple, straight 6-1, 6-4 win over countryman, Alex Kuznetsov.
In a match that lasted for only sixty four minutes, Querrey hit four times the number of aces as Kuznetsov which more than catered for his three double faults. Registering an impressive 86 percent win on his first serve, the third
seed converted three of six breakpoint opportunities to move on ahead at the event.
