Ryan Sweeting dumps Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the opener – BNP Paribas Open 2012
World number 80 Ryan Sweeting made short work of 79 ranked Cedrik-Marcel Stebe, ousting him in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 to make his way to the second round at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, USA on Friday.
Sweeting didn’t allow Stebe to settle down in the contest, grabbing the opening two games to attain a 2-0 lead straight away. The 24-year-old hit another blow in the fifth and did not lose his own serve, sealing the first set 6-2.
The American made some errors on his second serves. He hit two double faults and claimed five of the nine points on them. Though, Sweeting balanced that by securing an incredible 12 of the 14 first serve and nine of the 15 second
return points. The right-hander did not give Stebe any opportunity to break and capitalised on two of the seven he produced in the opener.
Sweeting once again hit early in the second set. The American made breakthrough in the very first game and consolidated on to take a 2-0 lead. Stebe could not find his way back into the match and lost two consecutive games to throw
it 2-6.
Both players hit a couple of aces and one double fault in the second set. Stebe was ahead in the first serve percentage, as he delivered 75 compared to 50 from Sweeting. However, the German had a pretty bad conversion rate, claiming
just three of the eight first and three of the five second serve points. Stebe did not receive any break point and could not save two of the five he came across in the second set. The match lasted for just an hour and 10 minutes.
This is Sweeting’s sixth appearance at the BNP Paribas Open. He made his debut in 2007 but failed to qualify for the main round in his first two attempts. However, he played quite well last year. The American upset Marcel Granollers
and Juan Monaco in the first and second round respectively. He lost to the world number one Rafael Nadal in the round of 32.
Sweeting is drawn to play 19th seed Fernando Verdasco in the next match.
