Ryan Sweeting triumphs over Dennis Nevolo to enter quarters – JSM Challenger 2012
Fourth seed, Ryan Sweeting, took down his wild card compatriot, Dennis Nevolo, in straight sets at the JSM Challenger of Champaign 2012 on Wednesday. He joggled up a 6-3, 6-2 victory against the world number 709 to book a spot in the quarter-finals at this
hard court tournament held in Illinois, United States.
The former world number 64, Sweeting re-kindled his spark to overpower Nevolo in their first encounter. He needed one hour and eight minutes to secure a place in the final eight at this event taking place from 10th to 17th November.
Sweeting comfortably entered this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Challenger Tour event. He smoothly kept his entire serves and required a single break of serve to pull out the opener with a 6-3 score line. The seed was never challenged with any
trouble and converted one out of two break opportunities to his advantage.
Currently ranked 147th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Sweeting maintained consistency in his game in the following set. He swiftly slid his entire serves without encountering any breakpoint. The higher ranked American then
cashed two out of six break opportunities and clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
All in all, the Bahamas-born Sweeting struck eight aces finished the battle with 59 points. He spilled three double faults and clobbered a lower first serve share of 54 per cent as compared to his rival’s 58 per cent. However, the seed magnificently clinched
24 out of 25 points on it and dominated throughout the clash.
Sweeting will face off another countryman, Rhyne Williams, who stomped over Great Britain’s Daniel Smethurst in straight sets to set up this meeting.
The top seed, Michael Russell, also earned the glory later that day. He superbly warded off five out of nine breakpoints he faced and marked six out of 13 break chances, eventually clobbering a 6-4, 6-4 score line in one hour and 37 minutes. Russell spilled
more double faults but manifested a better first serve share of 69 per cent as compared to his rival’s 57 per cent. He also tremendously availed 27 out of 49 points on it and ruled throughout the match.
