Ryan Tandy’s involvement in betting scandal brings fine – Rugby League
On Thursday, October 6, Ryan Tandy, the former Canterbury Bulldogs forward, has been fined Aus $4,000 and been hit with a one-year good behaviour bond, after his involvement in the National Rugby League betting scandal has been proven.
It has been revealed that Tandy was found guilty of his connection to the National Rugby League (NRL) betting scandal which involved his own financial interests.
However, it has been reported that Tandy was not involved in placing the bet himself. He was maintaining telephonic contact with those players who were part of the deal. Therefore, he has been charged as an accomplice.
As has been verified by the telephone records of the alleged forward, the Judge, who passed the final verdict against the former Bulldogs’ player, explained that the contact details were not mere coincidence. There is a strong link between the player’s participation
in betting on NRL’s 2010 match between the Bulldogs and the North Queensland Cowboys.
The prop is said to have an influence on manoeuvring the match scores, particularly in reference to the Cowboys’ first score which had been attained through a penalty goal.
The situation for the forward prop may go deeper than the initial fine charged. He may also have to face a lifetime ban from the world of rugby, as NRL has recently released a new statement about match-fixing crime, which says, "The NRL has reaffirmed that
it will impose life bans on any persons convicted of ‘match fixing’. In relation to today's court decision against player Ryan Tandy, the NRL notes there are a number of other legal matters still to be heard in connection with this investigation. Given the
time of the season and the imminent nature of those hearings, the NRL will reserve imposing any penalties on any person found guilty of fixing any part of a match until such time as those matters are resolved.”
It has also been confirmed that until the final verdict has not been reached for Tandy, the player will remain unregistered with NRL and no further registrations of any sort shall be entertained for the forward prop.
