Newcastle United’s versatile defender Ryan Taylor has reflected on ‘the best 12 months of his career’ and is aware that there are no guarantees at a big club like Newcastle.
A year ago, the defender’s career was clouded by uncertainty, with a future away from Tyneside looking imminent. Taylor has been a fringe player for the greater part of his two and a half years with the club, and he himself admitted to the fact that he expected
to be playing at a different club 12 months ago while he was on pre-season tour with the squad.
The Liverpool-born player himself could not have foreseen what happened next. Taylor fired a stunning free kick against local rivals Sunderland and quickly became a fan favourite. He has a very impressive season in the English top flight and was rewarded
by a new and improved long-term contract by manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew.
Taylor is aware of the challenges that lie ahead of him, especially considering the rigours of the Premier League and the Europa League along with the domestic cup competitions.
Speaking to an English newspaper, Taylor said:
“It’s been a great 12 months in my career. I signed a new contract last season and played a lot of games. The last 12 months have probably been the best so far.”
He primarily operates as a right-back and can also play in right midfield. Last season, he was deployed in the left-back position and he admitted that he struggled at first, but adapted and got comfortable later on.
“Football’s about taking chances. I got a massive lift after the Sunderland game. You can say from then on I never looked back,” he added.
“It’s been great. I’m not going to get carried away and say I’ll start this season and play every game. Who knows?”
“There are a few new lads in and everyone’s got to keep their head down and show the manager they want to play.”
Ryan Taylor is not taking anything for granted and is taking everything as it comes. He starred in Newcastle’s pre-season games against Monaco and Chemnitzer and is looking forward to their last pre-season game which will be played against Turkish side Fenerbahçe
in Ritzing.
