Ryan Theriot content with St. Louis Cardinals
Ryan Theriot recently made a move to the St. Louis Cardinals and many didn’t know why that happened. Now Theriot has come out to tell everyone that this was the only place he would have come to. Talking to the reporters, Ryan discussed the reasons for moving
to the Cards. After spending his last season in different teams, the player is now content with the environment he has and the people he’s got as his support.
Ryan Theriot will not be eligible for free agency until another 2 years but that doesn’t change the fact that the player is content with his move to the Cards. His season split between the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers, witnessed him lose his
performance against major teams in the National League. However, now things are different and the Cardinals are hopeful the player can produce a bigger performance for the club than anyone out there in the squad.
One thing making Ryan feel comfortable in St. Louis is his return to the shortstop position. With the Chicago Cubs he was forced to leave the slot, following the induction of Starlin Castro in the team. He is now eager to be back in his comfortable spot
and that has him looking for an opportunity to display his prowess with the fielding glove.
"I don't think it really (was) justified ... or feel like I didn't perform well enough to play short anymore at that point," he said. "I didn't feel like that was the case at all. I understand we had some players coming up and whatnot, but I can still play
short. I think we proved that in '07 in '08. We won the division. No other shortstop has had back-to-back division champions over there. It's definitely a fun spot for me."
His batting average in years 2008 and 2009 combined displayed an on base percentage of .365. The 31-year-old was disappointing with the two teams he featured for during the season 2010. His batting average dipped to .270. In addition to that, he managed
to strike only to homers in the year, followed with 29 Runs Batted In. His on base percentage dipped to .321 and his slugging percentage succumbed to .312. Nevertheless, there is optimism in the management’s decision to have him in the club.
There are numerous indicators in baseball to suggest mixed views on what Theriot will do this season. However, forecasting isn’t always right in determining human behaviour over the years.
The Cardinals look strong with Theriot and with Lance Berkman coming to the side on a one-year deal, anything is possible. There is Albert Pujols in the mix as well and it will be an interesting sight to see the stars mix play together. The league hasn’t
kicked off yet, but if things look the same in April, National League Central will be a tough place to compete for a title.
