Ryan Vogelsong’s pitching help San Francisco Giants defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 - Part 1
Ryan Vogelsong put in a brilliant pitching performance to help San Francisco Giants beat Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on Thursday, April 28.
After their last humiliating defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates where they couldn’t even manage to come up with a single run, the San Francisco Giants are finally pulling up their socks as they managed to defeat the Pirates.
The Giants have failed until now to have any sort of consistency in their performances. At times they have showed as to why exactly they are the current World Champions, but often there have been times where one has to wonder if this is the same team that
battled out and defeated the best of the best to win the World Series.
Vogelsong, the Giants saving grace had played for close to five years in Japan, Salt Lake and Lehigh Valley. He was not known, so for him to come to the Major Leagues and be announced as a starting pitcher for the reigning World Series Champions was quite
the thrill. Thankfully, he didn’t succumb to the pressure and expectations, as he settled in comfortably.
"It was a sense of accomplishment for me before the first pitch had even started," he said. "I was fighting it a little bit not to find myself getting too relaxed, you know?"
The match against the Pirates was his first start in the Major Leagues after a good seven years. He pitched with great command over the ball till the sixth inning as he went up against his former team, the Pirates.
"Thousands of times," Vogelsong said, "I wondered if I was ever going to pitch in the big leagues again, let alone get a chance to be a starter again and win a game."
His first appearance at the Majors was in the September of 2004 as he played for Pittsburgh. After that he spent almost thee season in Japan and then last year he was playing for the Triple A teams of the Los Angeles Angels and the Philadelphia Phillies.
"He came into spring training and he opened eyes up right away," Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy said. "The way he was throwing the ball, he could have easily made our club. We just didn't have a spot for him.
Vogelsong performed well on the field as he tied his career high by striking-out eight within the duration of five and two third innings.
Currently the Giants are at Number 13 on the rankings and they suffered a complete shut down last time against the Pirates. This time around, however things were different, as the Giants have regained some form and confidence in their offence.
