Ryan Vogelsong’s pitching help San Francisco Giants defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 5-2 - Part 2
The San Francisco Giants finally bagged a victory against the Pittsburgh Pirates after the disappointing performance in their last show down as the Giants went home defeated, without a single run on the score board.
The Giants went on a scoring spree in the third inning. Aaron Rowand was the first to score from the Giants’ side as he doubled to left and Mike Fontenot and Eli Whiteside were successful in scoring. Ryan Vogelsong effectively moved himself to third base.
Next Pablo Sandoval grounded into the fielder choice and Vogelsong scored as Rowand moved to third base. The next run that came in the third inning for the Giants was by Rowand as he stole home base and Sandoval stole second base, as later he moved to third
safely.
The Pirates scored once more in the sixth inning as Ryan Doumit grounded and Neil Walker successfully scored. Jones moved to second base. Rowand finished it off for the Giants as he singled towards left and Schierholtz scored.
"It doesn't matter who gets it," Rowand said, "but as a team when you've been struggling to get big hits, it helps everybody take a deep breath, step back and relax."
Brian Wilson marked his seventh save as he pitched in the ninth innings. The Giants had previously lost five of its last six.
Rowand performed better than expected as he stole home base in a double steal and managed three RBIs.
From the Pirates’ side, who have lost three out of their four home series since the season began, Neil Walker managed three hits.
Everyone was all praise for Vogelsong as he was definitely the star of the night. Vogelsong successfully retired 14 out of the 16 batters before the sixth inning came by. He managed to contain the Pirates’ offence effectively through his brilliant pitching
performance.
"He did a good job of keeping guys off-balance," Walker said of Vogelsong. "I was fortunate enough to hit a couple of barrels on him, but for the most part he was down in the zone and threw a lot of good pitches today."
The Giants are beginning to show good form and trying to get back to their winning ways through their aggressive offence. Vogelsong put in a tremendous performance to help guide the Giants to a much needed victory over the Pirates. This win is a definite
morale booster for the team, as the Pirates are a good squad with a decent record.
"It feels really good," Vogelsong said. "That was my main focus today was just to go out there today and put up a good start, give us a chance to start swinging the bats and guys came big through for me today.
It will be interesting to see how the Giants carry their winning momentum into their next game. The Pirates put in a decent performance, but it was not enough to contain the Giants’ offence.
