Ryan Vogelsong’s pitching helps San Francisco Giants defeat Colorado Rockies 2-1 - MLB Update
Ryan Vogelsong out played Jason Hammel as the San Francisco Giants overpowered the Colorado Rockies 2-1 in the rubber game at AT&T Park on Sunday, June 5 to clinch the series by 2-1.
The 33-year-old hurler performed exceptionally to take seven batters over eight innings, in which he allowed just one run over four hits and yielded just one walk. The right hand pitcher held the opposition to no-score until the fifth inning when he tossed
a shaky pitch that Rockies’ batter Chris Iannetta hit for a huge 412-feet long zero-breaking homer.
After allowing this hit, Vogelsong struck back and did not allow any hit in his last three innings. His outstanding performance with the ball forced the Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy to say some words of praise.
With their fourth win in just eight starts in the 2011 Major League Baseball season, the veteran ball thrower improved his record to 4-1 with a stupendous 1.68 ERA.
"Until this year I was always the guy who came in when the game was lopsided either way and usually when we were behind by a lot," Vogelsong said. "To be counted on to win games, it's awesome, just a great feeling. It's a role you need to do and not just
hang out and be a sideshow."
Vogelsong received a perfect back up from closer Brian Wilson, who saved his 17th game. He struck-out two batters without scattering any hit and walks over one inning spell.
Hammel, who threw some unplayable pitches to give a difficult time to the Giants’ batters throughout his seven innings spell, unexpectedly gave away a game-tying single in the sixth inning to Freddy Sanchez. Apart from this run, Hammel allowed just one more
hit, walked only two batters but could not take out more than four batters to confirm his fourth win of the season.
The game was tied in the eighth inning when Andres Torres drove in a single off the Rockies’ reliever Matt Lindstrom, who replaced Hammel in seventh inning. Lindstrom lost his first game after saving two and holding nine for the Rockies in 2011.
