Ryan Zimmerman awaits contractual decision from Washington Nationals – MLB News
Veteran third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman is still waiting a contractual decision from the Washington Nationals. Zimmerman, whose current contract with the Nationals is likely to end soon, now wants a big lengthy contract for a more secure future.
Zimmerman, 27, has played his entire career in the Nationals’ roster and now wants a potential extension. On the other hand, the Nationals want him for next several more seasons but some internal issues are not allowing them to decide over Zimmerman’s late demands.
Earlier, this week, Zimmerman spoke in the media explaining his true commitment with the team and why he wants a long contract with the Nationals.
Zimmerman said, “I said from the beginning that I want to be here my entire career. It's a place where I've obviously grown up. I've learned a lot of things here. I've had a lot of great memories here. I've been here through the times when it wasn't nice to be a National, when people didn't want to come to D.C.”
He added, “I'm here we are starting to become a viable team and people are starting to consider coming here every year. I want to be here when we go from a team that makes the playoffs, to ultimately winning a world championship.”
One cleared issue of bringing former Milwaukee Brewers' ace slugger Prince Fielder is also lingering in the Nationals’ franchise. They are still to offer him a potential long and big budgeted contract. While some experts say that Prince Fielder is the main hurdle between the Nationals and Ryan. This is also a possibility that the Nationals are saving some money by not promising Zimmerman any contract instead for a potential backup financial plan for acquiring Prince Fielder.
Zimmerman, having six years of professional experience, went 27-for-92 (.293) with an on-base percentage of .409 last season, as the team hit .231 with a .327 OBP. He is certainly a great player and if he gets extension in his current contract, it will help him achieve more accomplishments with the Nationals in the future.
