Ryan Zimmerman confesses he was concerned when he failed to connect at the start - MLB News
Now as the Washington Nationals’ third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has become the most consistent and prolific batter in the line-up, he recalls the time at the start of the season and how it felt back then.
He was granted a contract extension during Spring Training by the club due to his credentials to become a formidable offensive force. However, when he struggled offensively and disappointed the team officials, he was embarrassed and thus was h**l bent to
turn things around.
Currently Zimmerman is extremely satisfied with his performance. Unlike the way he began the season, he now smacks home-runs and connects hits on a regular basis. In fact more often than not, bulk of the production comes off his bat for the Nationals especially
if the last couple of months are considered.
Following the recovery from shoulder inflammation, Zimmerman started off with a series of hitless outings at the plate. At one stage, his presence seemed like a waste for the team as he was failing every time when he was allowed opportunities.
Gradually he improved and then he reached a level which easily vindicated the decision of the contract extension made by the team toward him.
Commenting on his miseries in the beginning, he stated that he understands that players take some time to adjust before they perform. However the reason why he was embarrassed back then was the fact that he was struggling to revolve the bat properly.
"I'm OK with the slow starts, but not being able to swing the bat and do the things health-wise, I was worried about that," Zimmerman said. "Because I know my body pretty well. Everyone in this room plays hurt. Everyone in every locker room. Nobody's healthy.
And I've played hurt a lot just like everyone else. But it was a different kind of feeling. It made me nervous."
Zimmerman will be mindful that the situation which matters the most is impending and during the post-season his performance will be critical for the team.
He will be trying to keep his present run of form afloat and play a decisive role in the important matches ahead.
