Ryan Zimmerman in talks with Washington Nationals for contract extension
Third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman wants some more years in the Washington Nationals roster as he and his agent Brodie Van have started approaching the top management for a potential contract extension.
Earlier, some inside MLB sources speculated in the media that both sides are planning to hold talks within couple of days. While later, the Nationals’ general manager Mike Rizzo somewhat confirmed that he is in touch with Zimmerman’s agent for a potential extension.
This is not the first time that Zimmerman or his agent have showed interest in extension, earlier, at the end of 2011 MLB season, Zimmerman had stated for contract extension in media. Zimmerman said, “I said from the beginning that I want to be here my entire career. It's a place where I've obviously grown up. I've learned a lot of things here. I've had a lot of great memories here. I've been here through the times when it wasn't nice to be National, when people didn't want to come to D.C. Now, I'm here [when] we are starting to become a viable team and people are starting to consider coming here every year. I want to be here when we go from a team that makes the playoffs, ultimately winning a world championship.”
Zimmerman is entering 2012 with a good hitting average of .289 along with 12 home-runs, 49 RBIs and .355 OBP while baseball pundits predict Zimmerman’s stats are pretty impressive for a third-base positioned player and he will definitely get his extension.
In the near future, his overall stats which are currently pretty consistent with .288 hitting with 128 homers, 498 RBIs and .355 OBP, will be checked by the entire Nationals’ management before any decision of his extension.
Ryan Zimmerman has started off well from the Nationals’ franchise in 2005 while never showing any loop holes in his game. To his credit, an All Star nomination with Gold Glove, Silver Slugger and Fielding Bible, Zimmerman certainly has some huge talent to represent the Nationals franchise for several more years. The next few days will be critical when both sides will be meeting for talks and it is hoped that Zimmerman gets some more years to represent the Nationals.
