Ryan Zimmerman still faces issues to resolve before potential extension – MLB News
The Washington Nationals’ third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman is still facing many internal issues on contract extension which has now made things more complicated for him and his franchise in order to initiate any positive development.
The Nationals’ general manager Mike Rizzo has recently spoke in the media and explained about this complicated situation. He described with detail and stated regarding Zimmerman and his wishes for extension.
Rizzo said, “We’re trying to reach the goal of getting him signed, I don’t have a real good idea on the deadline, whether it’ll get done or not. We’re continuing to try. We’re working extremely hard at it, when both sides want something and they’re working at it, yeah, I’m hopeful, we’ve got a player who wants to be in Washington and an ownership that wants him here.”
He added, “We’re working hard to get one of our franchise players signed here for the long-term. We’ve opened that door. We prefer not to. It would be a huge part of the negotiation.”
The Nationals and Zimmerman has long history of extension talks, but still noting positive has happened which is equally a bad thing for both sides. Zimmerman, who made a deal in 2009 for five years with the Nationals, but later his agent, demanded another deal which certainly is taking some time now.
Experts believe that the last contract of Zimmerman has some clauses which were not clear to him and his agent. According to Nationals’ sources, this is certainly some kind of misunderstanding between both parties that how the last contract was based and on what certain definite clauses.
Apart from his latest contract extension talks, the Nationals might be considering giving Zimmerman a new deal. Looking at his performance, one should be clear that he deserves this contract extension chance.
He was exceptional last season. He performed wonderfully down the stretch in the regular season and won many games for his team. Going with batting average of .289 along with 12 home-runs 49 RBIs and .355 OBP, Zimmerman certainly did a very good job for the Nationals putting them enormously close to advance into the next round.
