Ryder Cup 2010: Colin Montgomerie confused over Europe team's selection
Ryder Cup speculations are in the air as to who will make it to the team of 12 players for America? Colin Montgomerie is confused while Corey Pavin is facing problems in choosing a player who will be of no use for the team. However, here is a quick recap of the USPGA final rounds which might help in determining the final team.
American player Nick Watney ended with a score of 4-under-par at the Whistling Straits where the USPGA championship took place last week. Nick Watney is a student of Butch Harmon, who happens to be the former coach of Tiger Woods. Nick scored 66 on the third day of the championship when the weather conditions were a little pleasant. The 29-year-old American completed the week with a 13-under-par score.
It was a magnificent effort from Nick Watney, although this was not the only performance that got a lot of applause. China’s Wenchong Liang made a course record of 64 with an aggregate of eight under par to clinch a spot in the top five positions. Meanwhile Nick Watney's compatriot Dustin Johnson, another pupil of Butch Harmon settled with a five-under-par 67.
Rory McIlroy who posted a score of 62 in the final round of the Quail Hollow Championship posted a identical score to that of Dustin Johnson with a 67 on day three and it was quite strange that all the rookies were performing extraordinary at a course when the veterans were struggling with their drives throughout the four rounds. As far as Rory McIlroy’s overall game is concerned, he finished at the third spot on the final day.
Germany’s Martin Kaymer set the field on fire after posting 9-under-par on the final day, one shot behind Rory McIlroy to secure his place in the European team for the Ryder Cup. If the Europeans ruled the leader board in the morning; the Americans took the charge in the afternoon with Dustin Johnson, Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar. The trio in a bid to chase Nick Watney posted a score with a four shot lead.
All-in-all, Europe was supported by Rory McIlroy and Martin Kaymer. Both the players performed marvelously. However, according to the experts, the overall game delivered by the Europeans was quite satisfactory.
Colin Montgomerie on the other hand will have to go through a detailed analysis of his players. Only two tournaments are left before the selection process for the Ryder Cup team begins.
But it seems that Colin is being forced to accept some leading players that USPGA had referred to him. These players are not on the team by now, since they failed to qualify under the criteria. Colin wanted Luke Donald, Justin Rose and Padraig Harrington to play on the team but will they make it?
Likewise, the captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team is in a dilemma as well because it’s getting trickier for him to select a team of 12 players who would match the challenge of the European players.
