Ryder Cup 2010: What may happen in 12 singles on Monday? (Part 1)
The 2010 Ryder Cup has entered its last phase with Europe in the lead and only 12 singles left to decide the event's fate. After Europe earned 9½ points, chances are that final shot at victory will also fall in their court.
Here is what Bettor.com thinks the singles could look like:
Lee Westwood & Steve Stricker:
The first match is between the highest scorers of both teams. So, it would surely be a tough battle. Lee Westwood has 11 points so far whereas Stricker has 9. Obviously, both captains would have laid mines in their front line-ups as Ryder Cup history clearly
narrates that it is the only way to tackle things.
This is the best strategy to deal with the singles as the big guns decide the starting morale of the teams. As for the predicted picture, it could be more of a foursomes' rematch where Westwood and his partner had defeated Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker.
However, Monday's singles may be slightly different as the major battle would be at the putting ground.
The player best at putting will ultimately steal the show and it appears that Stricker would be better at this. He has an edge over Westy. Besides, if the Americans lose in the beginning then rest of the team might also lose its morale and hence confidence
too. Therefore, to keep the attention of the spectators intact, Stricker will have to win the match by 2&1. Of course, it would be a close combat.
Rory McIlroy & Stewart Cink:
The next match is between Rory McIlory and Stewart Cink. The U.S. Open champion is one of the most important players in the team. He is the only player who has hit more clutch shots than anyone else whereas McIlroy has a history of hit-and-miss in his debut
Ryder Cup.
Although, McIlory belongs to a stronger side and is good at long shots but Monday's field will require a heavy putter. Cink is the golfer to fulfil the required criteria. Therefore, he could take the young Irish down. Cink is that veteran who has a history
of knocking Sergio Garcia down in a single. His putter is working well so chances are that he will claim the required points for Pavin. The end score could be 4& 3.
Luke Donald & Jim Furyk:
Yet another classic duo! Luke Donald has been second to Westwood. He is highly compatible for a course with deep roughs as he has long straight drives, good green hits in regulation stats and an excellent iron play which keeps getting him out of bunkers.
As for Furyk, he is the recent FedEx Champion and one of the strongest players in the American camp. He will surely find 10 million ways to defeat Donald and could win the point of 1 up.
Martin Kaymer & Dustin Johnson:
Bettor.com believes that the forth match will be taken by the European side as the PGA champion is still in his form to defeat his once playoff partner. Dustin Johnson was kicked out of the USPGA championship when he was found grounding his clubs in a sand
bunker.
Or else, he was the certain winner. Once again, fate has bought them back face to face and even this time, Kaymer could steal the show. Although, he didn't perform so well on Sunday but still his overall performance throughout the week has been superb with
6 points whereas Johnson lost all of his three matches. Therefore, predictions are that Kaymer may pick 3&2.
Ian Poulter & Matt Kuchar:
Ian Poulter hasn't been superb throughout the three-day session and has managed to pick only 3 points. As for Kuchar, he delivered four birdies on Sunday and hasn’t lost even a single match so far. Therefore, chances are that he could pick more points than
Poulter. ‘Say 2 and 1’.
Finally, this is the first half of ‘what Monday may look like’. Do read what might happen to the rest of the seven pairs.
