Ryder Cup American Captain Davis Love III in a fix of whether to opt for Bubba Watson or Matt Kuchar
This year’s American team Captain Davis Love III is in a fix for the moment as to who will be his pick for the October showdown at Medinah Country Club, Chicago.
While ten spots on the team will be points based and the players will qualify through their respective performances over the season, Love will be picking up two players on his personal choice and is currently contemplating whether to pick Players champion
Matt Kuchar or the Masters Champion Bubba Watson.
Kuchar may not have won a major event this year on the likes of Watson who has a brighter chance of making space in the 12-memeber squad, he has done well in the season, posting another strong finish in the Masters, a joint third.
Of what Love has been telling about Watson’s inspirational approach shot on the second Playoff hole at Augusta National, the big-hitting American is likely to be selected for the team.
Kuchar, however, will have to land another title to edge past the other strong contenders on the tour this year.
Love said, "My son (Dru) and I ran home from the course Sunday to get in front of the TV to watch Bubba," Love said. "If there wasn't a U.S. player involved at the end of the Masters, and I wasn't the Ryder Cup captain, Dru and I probably would have stayed
on the course”.
He further added, "I heard Bubba in an interview on Golf Channel. He said something like, 'Even if I don't make the Ryder Cup team on points, I think my Masters win should be enough to get a pick' ".
Putting into consideration the exceptional performance of Hunter Mahan and Jason Dufner, both of whom have gone over to win two PGA titles in the current season, Love believes both players have a strong chance of making it through for the coveted Ryder Cup
team.
Out of top-12 US golfers this year, 11 have already won a title this season and the 2011 PGA Champion Keegan Bradley is the only one who hasn’t won a title so far.
Bradley, a rookie on the tour last year, won two titles on the tour which included the last major event on the calendar year, yet was not able to make space for himself in the President’ s Cup last year.
Fred Couples, last year’s US Captain for the President’s Cup preferred his long-time associate Tiger Woods for the coveted team, leaving behind the major winner Bradley.
