Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal hopes to reinvent form in ISPS Handa Wales Open this week
This year’s Ryder Cup European Captain Jose Maria Olazabal is currently in a fix, facing serious form vows and is hoping to get back in the groove ahead of the star-studded event at Medinah Country Club to launch himself as a credible Captain.
For the moment, the veteran Spaniard has chosen the ISPS Handa Wales Open in an attempt to reinvent his swing, the area of particular concern for the grizzled Olazabal.
Addressing the pre-tournament press moot ahead of the event, Olazabal admitted that he has to take care of certain aspects of his game in order to increase his credibility in the 39th Ryder Cup this year.
He said, “There are certain areas that I have to improve, but some other areas I'm pretty happy with it, mainly the driving and the three wood is getting me down. I had a great practise session yesterday but that's all I can do. I tried to go out there on
the golf course and see if I can hit more fairways than I usually do and from there on, try to score well”.
Two-time winner of the Masters, the 46-year-old Olazabal has been facing compounding problems since the start of the year and has made the cut in six events in his seven appearances this season, posting his highest finish of joint sixth at Volvo Golf Champions.
The Spaniard is well aware of the fact that he has to perform better than this before heading for the Medinah Country Club.
Olazabal will tee-off at the scenic Celtic Manor Resort, venue of the 2010 Ryder Cup where Graeme McDowell guided the sturdy European Team to a historic finish.
He added, “Obviously it’s great to be here. It's a big event, great golf course, conditions are pretty good, and the golf course is playing firm and fast up to now”.
Winner of 31 professional titles in his more than 25 years long career, Olazabal is considered as the pioneer of Spanish golf who strengthened the sport in the Mediterranean country.
Olazabal alongside Seve Ballesteros have the accolade of introducing the sport in continental Europe which has now turned into a threatening stronghold of the sport in recent times.
