Ryder Cup and Colin Montgomerie date back to 1991
Think about the Ryder Cup and you’ll hear Colin Montgomerie’s name along with it. Say Colin Montgomerie once and two things are bound to happen - one, the critics become all ears and two; a long formation of golfers will stand before the captain in respect
to the champion. The Ryder Cup will be starting on the 1st of October 2010 and Captain Montgomerie is making the headlines once again.
The 47-year-old has 31 European titles in his hands but the premier golfer still thinks he has under achieved till date. He finished as the runners up on 5 occasions to add in his resume and after spending many restless nights, picking pros for the Ryder
Cup’s European team, the captain wants his team to perform to the best of their abilities.
Colin Montgomerie is a player who has ruled many listings over his career. He remained undefeated for the European team in 8 matches, with six wins to his name. Adding more to the golf warriors list, he was undefeated in 2 halves, displaying his inspirational
skills at the biennial event.
When the Scott was chosen for the Ryder Cup Captain, the pick didn’t surprised many. When Montgomerie plays golf, it engulfs many in its haze and after choosing his 12 picks for the European team, the 47-year-old has high hopes of showing off his magic with
the help these professionals.
Montgomerie can make the news in 2010 quite similarly to what he did in 1991. He first appeared at the Ryder Cup came back 19 years ago at the Kiawah Island where he set his foot in an epic war. Critics at that time didn’t have high hopes but in the current
situation, the Scot is thinking otherwise.
Corey Pavin is another experienced golfer who plays in the American team. In 1991, Montgomerie very efficiently played against Pavin and Bernhard Langer, displaying a four-ball fiery match. His sizzling performance led to an increased fan following since
he attained a finish that had four to play against Mark Calcavecchia.
After Montgomerie sent shudders throughout the American side, has been the subject of special treatment since then. The shaken up entourage after taking back the defeated Pavin, had more respect for Montgomerie and his game.
In 1997 and 2004, Montgomerie claimed the winning points but failed to make Nick Faldo's team 2 years ago. Before he was barred from the team, the Scott played in every subsequent match.
However, Montgomerie will only be seen with a walkie-talkie in his hands at the Ryder Cup 2010. According to Montgomerie, Europe’s six year hold on the Ryder Cup may come to an end and he will be watching it from the side lines. He says that his absence
from the battle field is very tough to accept, it’s difficult and very hard to acknowledge.
His aura is still hovering the Celtic Manor fields with his 18 times Order of Merit.
Montgomerie is in a situation which is tough in every aspect. If the European team wins, then all credit will be given to the players but if the team loses, it’s the captain’s fault. With just one week to go in the Ryder Cup, he is a fervent captain who
wants all his pros to play an exceptional game. He is under the radar because of two things – firstly, he plays second fiddle to Faldo in captaincy and secondly, he has an intriguing tactical duel going on with his adversary and American Captain Corey Pavin.
