Ryder Cup committee announces the 2014 event at Gleneagles,Scotland
The coveted Ryder Cup title will now be returning to the famous Gleneagles Hotel in Scotland in the year 2014, the Ryder Cup European Tour committee announced on Tuesday, November 29. The event is scheduled to be held from September 26-18 and it will be
the 40th version of the biennial event of the sport.
"As the home of golf, Scotland is well placed to host the best Ryder Cup in the competition's history when it arrives at Gleneagles in 2014," Scotland's first minister Alex Salmond told the tournament's website. "I am delighted to announce today that the
2014 event will be held over the weekend of September 26-28, allowing the tens of thousands of spectators expected to attend to begin making their travel plans in earnest."
European Ryder Cup director Richard Hills also supported Salmond’s view and said that the tour has been working to provide all the necessary support for the event as it was decided some 10 years ago.
The stroke play event is held every two years between the US and the European Teams and the players are normally decided through the points table of the respective tours. On the likes of the President’s Cup, which although, is a relatively new event, the
Ryder Cup Team Captain also has reserve berths for two nominations on his behalf.
Ryder Cup was first held in the year 1927 between the US and English Teams. Later Irish Team was also brought into the fold in 1973, making it a more diverse event. The rest of the European Teams were included in the 1979 after which the event was completely
transformed into a world class event. Since the inauguration of the European and US lockdown from 1979, Europe has won the title eight times as compared to the US which won it for seven times. Both teams ended in a tie only once.
European Team won the last event held at the scenic Celtic Manor Resort in Wales in 2010 where Captain Colin Montgomerie led the European entourage from the front. Among the various performers in the event, Graeme McDowell, the 2010 US Open winner, played
a crucial role in European victory. The event will return next year at Medinah Country Club, Illinois, in 2012 where the US Team will be led by Davis Love III and the European Team will be playing under the Captaincy of Jose Maria Olazabal.
Ryder Cup constitute as one of the historic and the oldest sport title of the sport. It suffered discontinuation for almost six years during the years 1939 to 1945 in wake of the World War II. The four day event is an amalgam of Foursomes and Four Balls,
the various forms of the Stroke Play event, which further lead to the final day of the individual head-on events.
