Ryder Cup defeat was the most painful, said Phil Mickelson
Team USA is still coming to terms with the Ryder Cup loss at the hands of the Europeans at Medinah Golf and Country Club. USA was firmly in control of the situation when day two ended on Saturday.
However, a magnificent comeback from the Europeans ensured that they continue to maintain their dominance over their arch rivals, USA, in the Ryder Cup.
Team USA was leading by four points, heading in to the singles on Sunday. However, the Americans could not hold on to the lead of 10-6.
Meanwhile, Europe staged one of the most stunning comebacks in the history of the Ryder Cup.
Phil Mickelson is one of the players who is shell shocked and broken after their loss in Chicago. The veteran said that he still cannot believe that the Americans lost the match.
They could only win three singles out twelve, with Tiger Woods earning half a point against Nicolas Colsaerts.
"I don't know what happened Sunday," he told ESPN in his homeland. "I'm still l*****g wounds from that. It still stings. It's one of the toughest, most difficult losses I've ever had in my career".
"Individually, that and the Winged Foot US Open loss have stung the most. This one still hurts. I really thought we were going to get that win".
Lefty also defended Davis Love III’s decision to hold back him and Keegan Bradley for the fourballs on Saturday.
The duo, on Friday, completely dazzled the field with their performance, beating the pair of Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia in the foursomes. In the evening they outclassed the Irish pairing of Rory McIlroy and Graeme Dowell.
It was a surprising decision by Love to let two of his main players rest at such a crucial time. This might have cost Team USA the Ryder Cup.
"I thought it was a great idea because we were fresh and ready for the singles and we had a four-point lead," he added.
In the nine cups that Lefty has played, this is probably the worst defeat he has ever suffered, considering the fact that team USA had such a healthy lead with just singles to go.
"Of my nine Ryder Cups, that's the only time that's ever happened we had that kind of lead, so whatever Davis did the first two days was right on".
