Ryder Cup hero Martin Kaymer set to participate in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship
Martin Kaymer, who clinched the winning point for the European Ryder Cup team last week, is ready to continue his great form in this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship will start from October 4 to 7, at the Old Course at St Andrews, featuring some of the big guns from the European Tour.
Some of the prominent names include Ryder Cup heroes Paul Lawrie and Peter Hanson, reigning Open champion Ernie Els, former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen, former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, and Padraig Harrington.
Kaymer is certainly the strongest contender this week because of his boosted morale. Last week, he parred the final hole in a singles match against Steve Stricker and allowed his team to retain the Ryder Cup.
“Jose Maria had told me at the 16th, ‘We need your point and I don’t really care how you do it; just deliver’. It was very straightforward. I liked that – it’s the way we Germans are,” Kaymer said in a post tournament interview.
He concluded, “I could handle it and I made that last putt. I was not that nervous. I was very controlled because I knew exactly what I had to do”.
According to the golf commentators, beating the in-form German will not be an easy task for any player in the field.
Two years ago, he played a key role in European team’s success over the US Ryder Cup team, at the Celtic Manor Resort.
The very next week witnessed him take the Links’ title home. Therefore, one can expect a similar performance from the 10-time European Tour winner.
Michael Hoey, in the meantime, is also set to defend the title this week, for the first time in his career.
The Northern Irishman won the 2009 Estoril Open de Portugal and 2011 Madeira Islands Open. However, he did not receive a chance to defend his titles in the following years of his victories.
This week, he is relishing the opportunity of participating in the event as a defending champion.
Lewis has not been performing well in the past few months. However, no one can deny the fact that he has the potential to bounce back at any time of the year.
