Ryo Ishikawa is seeking a win in Puerto Rico
Ryo Ishikawa is aiming to improve his position in the world rankings by winning the PGA-staged event of the Puerto Rico Open presented by seepuertorico.com.
The 20-year-old Japanese professional golfer is in the field of the tournament and is displaying attractive strokes at the Trump International Golf Club, Rio Grande in Puerto Rico.
He came to Puerto Rico to improve his ranking, so that he can be selected for the first major tournament, the Masters at Augusta in April.
Amazingly, he was successfully selected for the Masters by the officials during the first round game-play in Puerto Rico.
Now, Ishikawa only has to focus on winning the tournament glory. Two rounds have been completed and the young Japanese star is playing well and competing impressively with other field members.
He scored a 2-under 70 in the first round on Thursday. Then he improved his performance in the second round on Friday and recorded a 5-under 67.
His final two-round score is 7-under 137. He was tied for the third position on the leaderboard with Todd Hamilton.
Ishikawa has scored nine birdies up till now and is expected to deliver more in the coming two rounds. He was mostly under and at par throughout the two days.
"Short game today was very good, and approach shots and putting," Ishikawa said on Friday.
"Everything went well. That resulted in birdies and some nice par saves. So the short game was the key thing".
He is giving his debut performance at the Trump International Golf Club and is doing extremely well. Last year he was in the field of the WGC-Cadillac Championship, which is in progress in Florida.
Due to the 53rd ranking, he was unable to meet the minimum requirements for the World Golf Championship. This is why he is playing at the PGA-staged event of Puerto Rico Open.
"It is, of course, a relief that I got the invitation from the Masters committee, but when I play a tournament, I concentrate on the tournament," Ishikawa said. "So I don’t think about anything else”.
"So there are two aspects, yes, I feel relieved, but when I play a tournament, I will play to win the tournament," he added.
After getting into the field of the Masters, Ishikawa has high plans of winning the title of Puerto Rico Open. The upcoming two rounds will be tough for the Japanese.
He needs to be extra impressive on the course. If he hits more birdies and save bogeys till the end of the tournament, then there are ample chances for him to become the proud winner of the title.
