Ryoko Fuda routs Liga Dekmeijere in the qualifying second round – Citi Open 2011
Ryoko Fuda needed only 79 minutes to beat Liga Dekmeijere of Latvia 6-0, 6-0 in the second round of the qualifying draw, being played here at the Tennis Center at College Park, Washington D.C.
Playing along the baseline, clinching every opportunity to extend points, striking frightening backhands this way and that, Fuda beat Dekmeijere in a gripping, highlight-filled match.
Dekmeijere, ranked 677th in the WTA (Women Tennis Association) rankings lists, reached the second round after beating Indian Tara Iyer and looked in disappointing form against the sixth-seeded Ryoko Fuda, who duly delivered
exactly what was expected of her.
The match was so one-sided that Fuda did not squander any break point opportunity and in the way she refused to take her foot off Dekmeijere’s neck confirming that the inner Fuda is a bit of a tigress. There was simply no way that
she was going to let her opponent win a game, clinching the match with a double bagel.
She served well, hustled through the points and tortured Dekmeijere with drop shots and passes on both wings that left her bewildered. Nevertheless, Dekmeijere also had some pleasing ground strokes but not enough to offer any great
deal of resistance to the eighth seed. Fuda looked totally comfortable and never allowed the Latvian to take the initiative as she was forced into doing most of the chasing and did not look near her best form.
There was a hiccup when Fuda in the second set where the Japanese served four double-faults. However, her opponent failed to take advantage of these slip ups and allowed Fuda to regain her composure and move on into the third round
with majority of points.
The Japanese clinched her straight sets win by scoring 61 percent of point on service, 63 percent of points on return and a total of 62 percent of points in total. By contrast, the Latvian managed to win 37 percent of points on
service, 39 percent of points on return and 38 percent of points during the match.
By virtue of this victory, the 24-year-old Fuda has gone one up in their head-to-head score and now moves on ahead to face Kim Grajdek of Germany, who made it to the third round after the second-seeded Lauren Albanese called it
quits due to an injury.
