Ryosuke Irie clinches Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day three - Tatsumi International Pool, Tokyo
Ryosuke Irie clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on day three of the Tatsumi International Pool in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday, April 4.
Irie, who qualified into the playoff as fastest swimmer, continued his ascendancy in the final lap and climbed the medal rostrum for gold medal. He displayed his nerve-wrecking form in the double lap event and upset his challengers, who were eyeing the title of the event.
With his laudable efforts in the 100m discipline, Irie snared the crown of the event by tapping the wall with an effort of 52.91 seconds. The gold medallist was almost 0.70 seconds slower from lowering the national mark 52.24 seconds.
His effort remained almost 1.20 seconds ahead of Junya Koga, who followed him on the victory stand for second position by producing a time of 54.14 seconds.
The silver medallist was trailed by Yuuki Shirai, who was just one stroke slower from Koga over the finishing end and surfaced on the finishing wall with the timing of 54.22 seconds for bronze medal.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Takashi Iyobe, who stayed 0.31 seconds slower and completed his swim in a time of 54.53 seconds.
Iyobe was chased by Yamato Ujibayashi, who concluded his race in a time of 54.88 seconds and occupied fifth finest spot of the event.
With his wonderful effort, Ujibayashi stayed 0.16 seconds faster from Kazuki Watanabe, who proved his audacity for the sixth best spot of the race by touching the wall with the timing of 55.04 seconds.
The seventh best spot of the event was secured by Yuusuke Kudou, who remained 0.29 seconds behind and hit the wall with the timing of 55.33 seconds. Kudou was chased by Masafumi Yamaguchi, who was only 0.09 seconds slower and settled on the finishing wall as eighth position holder by posting a time of 55.42 seconds.
Furthermore, the session came to an end after the praiseworthy efforts of all participants in the scheduled events whereas the position holders were called upon the medal rostrum for awards and accolades at the prize ceremony after the session.
