Ryosuke Irie clinches Men’s 200m back-stroke gold title: Day One – 2011 World University Games
Ryosuke Irie of Japan displayed a remarkable swim before the Chinese audience to win the gold medal of the Men’s 200m back-stroke meet on the opening day of the 2011 World University Games on Sunday, August 14, in Shenzhen, China.
Irie claimed the title of the event in a comfortable manner, as he remained prominently away from his fellow swimmers, by reporting in a time of 1 minute and 56.01 seconds. His effort was 4.09 seconds slower than the world record of 1 minute and 51.92 seconds,
set by Aaron Peirsol of USA during his participation at the 2009 World Championships. He was also 1.88 seconds behind his own game record of 1 minute and 54.13 seconds, made by Irie in 2009.
Irie maintained a magnificent lead of 2.65 seconds over his closest competitor, Rexford Tullius of USA, who submitted a time of 1 minute and 58.66 seconds for the silver medal. Tullius was trailed by Gareth Kean of New Zealand, who failed to prevail over
the effort of his preceding swimmer with a difference of just 0.08 seconds, as Kean posted a time of 1 minute and 58.74 seconds for third position.
The bronze medallist was chased by Cody Chitwood of USA, who remained just 0.74 seconds slower than Kean and ended his swim, with a timing of 1 minute and 59.48 seconds. Artem Dubovskoy of Russia emerged as the fifth fastest swimmer of the event, as he remained
just 0.03 seconds behind and clocked a timing of 1 minute and 59.51 seconds.
Meanwhile, Matthew James Swanston of Canada transpired as the sixth position holder of the event, as he touched the finishing wall to complete his swim in a time of 1 minute and 59.54 seconds. Anton Anchin of Russia and Jan Philip Glania of Germany were
the last two swimmers of the four-lap discipline, as they posted timings of 1:59.74 and 2:00.67 minutes, respectively.
Furthermore, the session concluded with the heart-winning swims of all participants, while the podium finishers received their medals after the session.
