Ryosuke Irie wins Men’s 200m backstroke semi-finals: Day five - Tatsumi International Pool, Tokyo
Ryosuke Irie won the semi-finals of Men’s 200m backstroke on day five of the Tatsumi International Pool in Tokyo, Japan on Friday, April 6.
Irie, who qualified into the semi-final as finest swimmer, sustained his pace in the second round to enter the playoff as top contender for gold medal.
Irie made significant improvement in his timing and entered the playoff as top fastest swimmer by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 56.16 seconds.
His dominating effort remained nearly 1.50 seconds ahead of Kazuki Watanabe, who proved his mettle for the second best qualifying position by posting a time of 1 minute and 57.88 seconds.
Watanabe was followed by Kuninori Tada, who was almost 0.30 seconds apart and entered the final round as third best finisher with the timing of 1 minute and 58.17 seconds.
Next were the semi-finals of Women’s 200m breaststroke, where Satomi Suzuki met expectations of her supporters and transpired on the finishing end as top finisher with an effort of 2 minutes and 24.56 seconds.
Her effort was trailed by Kanako Watanabe, who stayed nearly two strokes slower and concluded her swim with the timing of 2 minutes and 24.88 seconds.
She was followed by Miho Takahashi and Rie Kanetou, who stayed 0.57 seconds slower from their former finisher and tapped the finishing end with the same time of 2 minutes and 25.45 seconds for a joint third.
Third semi-final of the evening was Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), where Kousuke Hagino remained dominant over his challengers and clocked a time of 1 minute and 59.64 seconds for first position.
He was followed by Ken Takakuwa, who stayed nearly one stroke behind and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 59.82 seconds.
Takakuwa remained 0.11 seconds faster from his following rival, Daiya Seto, who proved his eligibility for the third finest qualification spot by touching the wall in a time of 1 minute and 59.93 seconds.
Furthermore, these finalists will face each other in the playoff, where the winners will be awarded podiums for their notable efforts after the session.
