I know Ryu means school and Ha means group or school of thought, but what is the difference between the two?

  1. In more technical aspect of the budo terms.   Commonly knowns as style or system of a particular style,  "Ryu" is translated correctly as "to flow".

    The "ha" addition can be translated as  selected group or perhaps a faction.

    A good example would be as follow:

    Ryu =  Matsubayashi Ryu

    Ha =   Matsubayashi Ushiro-Ha Ryu

    Hoped this helps !
