Rоry McIlrоy happy with less attention on him for the British Open
Rоry McIlrоy is happily flying under the radar this week, believing the diversion of attention towards Tiger Woоds may help him challenge the players at the British Open.
While talking to the media on Tuesday, he expressed his pleasure of not being in the spotlight while he prepares for the Open this year.
Woods, in the meantime, is the most sensational player on planet earth because of his stunning performance on the PGA Tour this season. He has won three events, the highest number of victories by any player in the 2012 golf season.
Last year, McIlroy entered the championship with the US Open title registered to his name. Therefore, he was followed by the golf fans, media personnel, friends and colleagues to congratulate him for an amazing victory that he had.
"It's been great. It's been lovely just going about my business - definitely not the madness that was going on last year. It's nice,” he said.
“I've tried to keep it as low-key as possible and feel like I've done that pretty well. Obviously people still come up and want photos and stuff, but the commotion's definitely not as bad”.
As a result of being surrounded by different people at the Open last year, he failed to counter the pressure and recorded a disappointing 25th-place finish in the end.
This year, he made a brilliant start and started recording top-5’s and top-10’s in each of the events that he played on the PGA and European Tours.
Right after his victory in the Honda Classic, he surged to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career.
Afterwards, every eye was on him and he was all over the news. Once again, he faltered and took the shared 40th place in the Masters Tournament.
He then bounced back strongly with a second-place finish in the Wells Fargo Championship, followed by a disappointing streak of three consecutive missed cuts.
This time, when he had a press conference, a little crowd showed up, which he thinks was a good sign for him.
"I think taking three weeks off before was something to do with it," he said of his performance there. "Obviously there were so many requests coming in and so many things to do".
He also admitted that he was wrong in his comments last year that portrayed his failure in The Open Championship as the result of bad weather and bad luck.
