  1. The best behavior plan is great communication and for them to like you

  2. My suggestion is that you learn something about applied behavior analysis. This will keep you from inadvertently giving reinforcement to misbehavior. It will also allow you to examine the environment in which the behavior occurs so that you can make changes when necessary.

It is very important that you understand that academic failure is the primary cause of misbehavior in school. If you are teaching information that is too hard or if your instructional sessions are too long or boring, you will find behavior deteriorating.

The most common mistake that I see in classrooms is teachers giving most of the attention to children are misbehaving. Use praise very densely all of the time and make sure its going to children who are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Giving copious negative attention to misbehavior is playing right into the hands of attention seeking kids who don't care what kind of attention they get. Also, when kids are misbehaving, when they start doing what you want, praise the behavior change immediately.

Try to figure out what children are trying to communicate with their behavior and teach them to communicate more appropriately. Communcation skills are as important as academics to these children.

Finally, the best I advice I EVER got was from an old education prof. He said, "You will discipline through your relationship with the child. If they know you care and trust you to be fair, they will allow you to discipline them.

Finally, go to Dr. Mac's Amazing Behavior Management Page and do some reading.

  3. You definately want to sign up for the CPI class so that if and when you need to, you will know how to properly restrain them without hurting them and to protect yourself. Next, read each of their files for their history and what type of modifications/accomodations that need to be met so that you can follow them accordingly. Sometimes, previous teachers will include tips on how to work with them. They should also have some type of behavior plan in their file that needs to be followed as well. It will explain when a reward is necessary and it is not and what type of discipline to apply when needed.
