The Giants won a best-of-three tiebreaker over the Los Angeles Dodgers for the National League pennant, then began the World Series the next day at Candlestick Park. San Francisco and New York engaged in a back-and-forth classic, with the teams alternating victories all the way through Game 7. The Giants trailed 1-0 in the final game, but pinch hitter Matty Alou led off the bottom of the ninth with a bunt single. Yankees starter Ralph Terry struck out Felipe Alou and Chuck Hiller, but Willie Mays doubled to the right-field corner to put the tying and winning runs in scoring position. With Orlando Cepeda waiting on deck, the Yankees chose to pitch to cleanup hitter Willie McCovey with a base open. McCovey lined an 0-1 pitch that Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson speared for the series-clinching out. The Yanks prevailed despite dismal performances from Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, who hit .174 and .120, respectively, in the series.
