    The phrase means the senate and roman people and was used to emphasize to the roman citizenery that everthing in Rome and all the battles fought and won were for them.  They put this symbol on everything as a reminder to the people of how powerful Rome was and that they are a part of it.  It was also a way for the leaders to show that they were spending some of the money for the people and not just on themselves.

  3. ahaha.. i'm italian, i dont know if you have ever seen the movie of asterix and obelix... there was a scene of the movie where a french soldier said "S.P.Q.R = Sono Pazzi Questi Romani!!" that means "these romans are crazy!" ahaha.. was too fun... but no, i dont know the real meanning of it...=p

  4. And you'll find a lot of S.P.Q.R. (Capital letters) in Rome, because the actual municipality use the same acronyms on the road signals, bus stop etc.

    No wonder no many Romans know about the old meaning.

    Latin is a dead language that just the professors know (unfortunately)
