SA: Your thoughts on the following retail shops?

Shoprite, Checkers and Pick n Pay. I would like your opinions on how they compare on price, quality, hygiene, service. Not so much interested in service, as you get rude and unhelpful service everywhere. Which one do you think is the best to do your monthly shopping at?

Thank you.

  1. pic 'n pay have very strict hygien standards, as does checkers.

Pic 'n Pay's quality of product is also very good.

Checkers now and then have a glitch, but they are always willing to take back and replace.

I'm not too fond of Shoprite as it looks dodgy and their floors are more often dirty than clean.

  2. Shoprite - Caters to the lower income bracket - both in stock price and quality of produce.

Pick n Pay and Checks are very similar, checks usually have better Deli sections and in my opinion are more expensive that the former.

BTW Bull XI Hyperrama, is a type of large checkers.

  3. Checkers and Pick n Pay are mo similar good brand clean  and Shoprite low prices but not good brand

  4. Woolworths is best on quality I believe but I don't think it can be found everywhere.

  5. I always prefer PnP because they've got pretty good standardisation of their products. Also their service is very good usually, though they tend to be the more expensive of the 3. The quality of their bakeries and butchery are pretty much equal to any other branch.

Checkers is actually quite good in my area. I tend to go there as much as PnP, though I've noticed their service is a little slack.

Shoprite... I don't even walk into Shoprites. I find the floors always sticky and once I bought a bread roll and it had half a cockroach in it, I kid you not.

  6. Shoprite:

    Price - Excellent

    Quality - Average

Hygiene - Average to below standard

    Service - Dismal

    Checkers:

    Price - Excellent

    Quality - Average

    Hygiene - Average

    Service - Dismal

    Pick n Pay:

    Price - Reasonable

    Quality - Good

    Hygiene - Good

    Service - Dismal

We generally do out large monthly shop at the Hyperama, I think it is a Pick n Pay and purchase other monthly odds and ends at the local Spar when needed.

There is unfortunately no Checkers within reasonable driving distance to our home other than the Checkers Hyper in the Menlyn Mall which we do occasionally shop at, we also buy certain items at Woolworth's, mainly Avocados and fruit as we hate waiting for Avos to ripen or spoiled fruit and the Woolies Avos are already ripe and ready to eat.

  7. I buy at Shoprite because they are cheaper, but things like meat and vegetables, i am particularly fussy about, and will only buy it, if it is fresh and clean

  8. shoprite n checkers are way cheaper, but the popular brands are only slightly less, and the rest of the stuff in there is low quality. Pick n pay has a great deli section and is cleaner, nicer, and has brilliant no name stuff.
