SA and NSW win Day Two Games of U-21 Australian National Women’s Championship
The Women’s hockey teams of South Australia and New South Wales (NSW) emerged victorious over Northern Territory (NT) and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) by 4-1 and 3-0, respectively in the Day Two games of the U-21 Australian Women National Women Championship.
In the first game of the day, the players from South Australia and Northern Territory were full of zeal and carried out back-to-back strikes against each other.
Despite plenty of attacks and counter-attacks, SA and NT both the teams failed to mark a score in the first thirty-five minutes of the match. Though, it was goal-less period, the defending girls from the two sides exhibited a splendid show and denied many
offences from the either side.
The second half of the match was full of action and thrill, where five goals were scored from the two teams in the period.
With one minute into the second round, Jane Claxton managed the first goal of the day and put South Australia ahead on the scoreboard.
In the 45th minute of the match, Brooke Peris scored first goal for Northern Territory and tied the knots at one-each. However, the real action was witnessed between 50th and 60th minute. Catherine Connolly scored a goal
in the 52nd minute of the match, while her team-mates, Amy Waters and Jane Claxton, added one goal each in the 55th and 58th minutes respectively, to take an insurmountable three-goal lead. Without further development, the
match concluded with SA’s victory at 4-1.
In the later part of the day, the NSW women trounced ACT by three unanswered goals. Though the ACT's outfit showed stiffened defence in the game, but failed to stop the NSW's strikers.
With 12 minutes into the game, the NSW earned first short-corner of the day and Cara Simpson was the player who converted the opportunity. She hit a drag-flick which moved right into the net. The maiden goal further boosted the spirit of NSW women and they
started back-to-back strikes. In the 13th minute of the match, Mardi Watts held the ball under her stick and unleashed a powerful scooping shot at the top of the right corner of the goal-post. The second goal was a great point of concern for ACT's
women, but they failed to break the defence-line of NSW.
Both teams moved into the second period with ACT trailing by a couple of goals. Kristen Pearce of NSW converted a penalty-stroke in the 61st minute and expanded the lead up to three goals. The ACT's women failed to open the scoring and lost the
match by 3-0.
