SA and Victoria win Day-7 Games in Men’s U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship
The men’s hockey teams of South Australia (SA) and Victoria succeeded in their Day-7 matches respectively, against Western Australia (WA) and Australian Capital Territory (ACT) by similar 4-2. The crucial fixtures of the U-21 Australian National Hockey Championship
were held at the Perth Hockey Stadium.
A close-range action was observed in the first encounter of the day, where SA and WA marked one goal apiece in the first half action. In a counter-offence, Cameron White volleyed a flicking shot in into the goal in the 7th minute and put South
Australia to the lead.
It was the point which put Western part under intense pressure. After some failed efforts, Neil Rose converted a short-corner in the 18th minute of the match and locked at one-each.
The second half was mostly dominated by Southern side which obtained three goals, while limiting Western team only for a single goal. Cameron Joyce of South Australia scored off a penalty-corner in the 48th minute which was countered by a field
goal from Kyle Angwin in the 51st minute.
After the second tie-up, the SA men further sped up their game and earned a couple of goals to expand their lead. Cameron Joyce converted a short-corner while his team-mate, Harrison Gill, added a goal from the field in the 62 minute of the match. It was
the final scoring and South Australia rode away the field with a 4-2 victory.
In the second encounter of the day, the Victorians scored four goals against the two of their competitors and upgraded its position at the point-chart. It was a must win to enter in the play-off round. They began the game in a well-coordinated style and
created many chances to establish their early dominance on field.
On the other side, the Victorians started the action in the 3rd minute of the match. Byron Walton scored a goal from the field effort to create pressure for ACT. They continued their fast and furious style of play and doubled the tally in the
17th minute of the match. Oscar Wookey found him alone in front of the goal and struck a low-flick into the net. With three minutes remaining into the first half, Luke Young added a goal and stretched the lead up to three goals.
In the second half of play, Sam Fraser scored a goal for Victoria, while Sam Wallace and Jack Wallace marked two goals for ACT squad. As the final horn sounded, Victoria won the game by two goals, 4-2.
