SAGDB promotes golf in South Africa
Africa Open that ended in January this year is in the headlines once again. The South Africa Golf Development Board (SAGDB) has said that The Richer Future Foundation has given the entity R150,000 sponsorship to promote their development programme across
the country.
The Richer Future Foundation oversees Africa Open and has been working to boost the sport in South Africa.
Having been launched in 2011, the Foundation has conducted several developmental programmes for the promotion of golf in the region.
Africa Open gained attention in recent years after it featured key players from across the world.
Keeping in view its growing popularity, the officials decided to stage the event in its traditional home, Buffalo City, for the next five years.
Speaking to the media, the Executive Director of The Richer Future Foundation, Ken Viljoen, said that the sponsorship given to them reflects that Africa Open has found a solid foothold in the golf world.
Although the Open has yet to go a long way to prove its worth, the recent tournaments featuring prominent players and tough competition are a proof that golf will see a good future in South Africa.
The Foundation has had a solid backing, as its contributors include some of the leading figures in golf.
Northern Irish star Darren Clarke, who is best known for his victory in the 2011 Open Championship, has been working in close cooperation with the Foundation.
Another key contributor who helped build the Foundation is Louis Oosthuizen. Oosthuizen won the 2012 Africa Open, in January, and his involvement has help the officials prop up the sport in the country.
Moreover, Charl Schwartzel and Retief Goosen were also among the first major contributors.
“The Foundation invited tenders from various development organisations while the Sunshine Tour held the funds in trust,” Viljoen said.
He further stated, “We went through a strict vetting process and we are extremely thankful that the Foundation selected us as one of the recipients from the trust brought about by the Africa Open”.
The SAGDB’s role is important because it is the only entity in South Africa that oversees pro and amateur golf.
Regional Manager of the Board, Millie Zim said that the sponsorship given by the Foundation will be used in a number of departments.
“The sponsorship will cover driving range fees, training equipment, club membership, green fees including balls and tees, meals and drinks at tournaments, coaching fees and transport to and from the driving range and golf course,” Zim said.
