SAHM- How often do you leave the house?

Okay so I was completely restless today and suddenly realized I haven't been out since last Thursday! And that was for a 1/2 hour errand to Walmart. I don't drive and it has been cold, wet, windy lately so no walks-arrg. My one thing that keeps my sanity and I can't even do that-lol You would think the house would be spotless but um yeah-lol So today I packed us up , looked at my husband and said we are going out. Where to? A quick trip to pick something up from Walmart!-lol

Do you go out everyday? Or do you suddenly realize like me that it has been days? Am I the only housebound, restless and now agitated because of it so much that everyone stays clear stay at home mom?

  1. I moved out to the country just after i had my baby, which was good for me because something as little as grocery shopping now takes me a whole day and gets us out of the house. I have been here since April and have not made one friend!! (which is fine by me, ive met a few ladies at the health nurse place but theyre not my type!) You think i'd get bored but meh.. beats getting up at 6am to go to work and my baby going to child care. At least this way i wont miss him growing up!!

  2. I have a 4 month old baby and I just began taking an hour long class two days per week. I stayed home all summer with our baby and the days I don't go to school, I stay home as well. When it's just me and him, we can spend the whole day at home. I recently got a gym membership, so I have been doing that a few times a week while my mom or my hubby watches our baby. I've found that working out has really helped to keep me feeling happy and balanced.

  3. I stay at home and if I don't have things to do on the weekend I will make my hubby go shopping just to get out the house. I never go more than a week longer but I think its made me a lil OCD. I have the cleanest home of anyone I know with a 5 yr old!

  4. I'm at home with my 3 month old son.  I've got to get out of the house everyday for a few hours.  Either a long walk, window shopping or just visiting friends.  Someday we do it all.  The day goes much easier when you can get out.

  5. i try to get out as often as posible.  right now we are getting all the left over from hurrican gustav. its going on the 3rd day non stop. but im still getting out. my hubby is in the guard so he is away helping. so im home alone for a week :( ive gone a long time not getting out and i was going CRAZY!!!

  6. Im a SAHM, and i get out at least a couple times a day now. but on occassion ill just like to stay home and relax all day till my boyfriend gets home and than we just spend time with just the three of us.. which is alway wonderful

My boyfriend and i go involved into slo-pitch.. and surprising we walk there play for 2-3 hours and walk back which is about a 1 hour walk. our son has grown up a baseball feild baby pretty much. that and floorl hockey( boyfriends #2 sport)

walmart is the best place to go to kill time and just get out though! even if you dont need anything lol!

  7. I go nutz sitting at home all day.  I thankfully have a wonderfully understanding husband.  We both agreed that it was better for my sanity for me to continue to work on weekends only.  I do end up going in some weeknights here and there.  I need to get out sometimes.  If I am not working, when my son sleeps I walk outside and sit on the steps with the monitor in my hand.  I need to be outside home at times.

  8. Your not alone. There have been times when I realize I haven't been out of the house in two or three weeks with the exception of you guessed it Wal-mart lol. I do drive but I live in a really small town and there's noting to do. If it wasn't for doctor's appointment's and Wal-mart I'd be confined to my house.

  9. LOL...  I don't drive either.  I am a stay at home mom.... and I can go for a week or two before realizing I haven't left my house......  and usually when we do leave.... its to the grocery.... or to get diapers.... or just run errands.

Sometimes we travel up north to go stay at my dads and visit for a few days.... but when we get home again.... I usually go nowhere for at least a week.   I do have girlfriends that stop over and see me during the week..... which helps.  But being a stay at home mom can begin to feel like ground hogs day.... lol.... which just so happens to be the day my son was born...lol!

  10. Not often enough.

I, like you, suddenly realize its been like a week. My dad had my daughter the other night and my husband and I left the house at like 11 at night and went grocery shopping! lol.

I had fun. Its nice to get out once in awhile. lol.

Definitely not the only housbound, restless, and agitated SAHM.

  11. I know what you mean. It's been hideously HOT!!! here. 100 degrees with the heat index. I haven't been going anywhere because I don't want to subject my 4 month old to the heat. I figure thare'll come a day when I'll have to cart him everywhere. For now I'm saving a bundle on gas.

  12. I always chuckle at the term "stay at home mother".  Yeah, right.  I leave the house nearly daily, though I like the lazy days of staying home (though it would probably not be a novelty if it were common).

I have three children, ages 10, 8, and (almost) 1.  We go to church, both of the older children are in Scouts, 4H, and various other activities and we homeschool, so we get together with our association for field trips, coop classes and the like.  Sometimes it seems we are NOT at home more than we are.

There have been times when I have felt couped up, and we loaded up and went somewhere.  Wal Mart is a popular choice for us, too (LOL).  It is about 20 minutes away from us since we live in the country, so it gets us out of the house for a couple of hours.

Anyway, I am sorry the weather is nasty where you are, and I am glad you got out!  I hope it made you feel better.

  13. You are blessed to have figured this out with your first child, lol.  With my first two who are 7 and 10 now I was a hermit.  We lived in Colorado at the time and both my sons were winter babies so I didn't do the walking thing.  And ya... some would think your house would be spotless but it will actually be worse if you stay cooped up... don't know why, it just gets worse.

With this baby who is now 9 weeks old I try to get out for a walk everyday.  But now it is getting chilly so... we go to the mall.  I kinda look at the stores, but I just stay in the mall and treat myself to an orange julius or something like that and we stroll, lol.  I also get out now because my older sons attend school and sports so we are actually quite busy.. that is when I realized that getting out of the house actually makes it easier to keep your house clean and keeps your sanity.  So... get out, whatever you do, lol.  The best place that I have found where I live to go when it is cold is the mall.  There are also usually 'mom's groups' through your hospital that meet once a week.. I never attended those as I am not a social butterfly, but if that is your gig then go for it.  Also if you just want to get out and not neccesarily walk, (and this one is great once your baby hits about 14 months) go to a Barnes and Noble book store or a Borders book store.  Pick out a book you like and sit in the kids section, let your child read and play while you read your book, this is free.  You could also go to the library and do the same thing.

Well, that is all I can think of right now, I will Edit if I think of any more.  But the key is to just get up and get out!!  Once you are out you can find all kinds of things to do!

Good Luck and have fun!!  I hope this helped a lil!

  14. I don't drive so I go when someone else I know is going some place that I need to go.  With my oldest son being in Physical Therapy twice a month, Councling twice a month and other Dr's appts we are usually out once a week but sometimes we go a couple of weeks without really leaving the house and I feel like I am going insane with cabin fever.  There are no stores in walking distance and no parks or anything so while my 6 year old is at kindergarten now my 3 year old and I are going insane at home lol

  15. i try to get out everyday but that doesn't always happens...i have to get out every couple of day cuz my daughter starts getting cranky and restless...i too am a SAHM and completely understand where you are coming from and how you feel.

  16. sometimes I realize its been days, but some weeks we are out everyday and by the end of the week I'm exhausted.  Lucas and I started baby and me aquafit today (and man was it fun, although I can bareley walk tonight..lol).  Is there a class like that that you could sign up for?  I have decided that my son is obviously part fish...lol  Could you take a bus there once a week?  It would be great for baby, and even better for mommy.  There are other moms to meet and you even get some exercise out of it (lol...)

I know with winter approaching quickly (my fellow Canadian), it will be a bit harder!!  Is there a mall close by that you could either bus to or walk to for just a stroll around and maybe a coffee and some people watching?  West Edmonton Mall has been my saving grace some weeks (plus its the largest mall in the world).  We people watch and walk around making a Christmas list (lol...) and stop for a coffee and a bottle for the little fella!!

Hope these help a bit...it sucks being housebound...you start to go nuts after awhile (and I agree, the housework slips further and further behind "for no good reason".  :-)

  17. I don't leave the house nearly as often as I should.

My daughter (21mo) has a Gymnastics class every Wednesday morning, so we at least get out and about one day a week...LOL. And I always take my daughter to my parents house on Friday afternoon....

Like you, you'd think my house would be spotless. Unfortunately, it's a pig stye tonight, and I'm thinking about just going to bed and leaving it for tomorrow...
