SANZAR hands over two-week ban to Sharks’ flank Jean Deysel for tackle – Rugby news
South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby (SANZAR) has announced a two-week ban on the South African Super Rugby franchise, Sharks’ flanker, Jean Deysel. The incident took place in the super xv round 15 matches between Sharks and Waratahs at Kings Park Stadium, Durban on Saturday, May 28.
During the 51st minute of the game, Sharks flanker Deysel made a dangerous tackle on the Waratahs centre Tom Carter. The match umpire sin binned Deysel for his tackle in the game that Sharks eventually won by a margin of five points. Deysel was later cited by the SANZAR citing commissioner, for his dangerous tackle in the match against Carter. He was cited under the International Rugby Board Law (IRB) 10.4 (e) and 10.4 (m).
IRB law10.4 (e) relates to the dangerous tackling of a player without the ball and Law 10.4 (m) deals with any acts contrary to good sportsmanship.
Sharks flanker Deysel was asked to appear before the SANZAR Judicial Officer, Peter Ingwersen, on Monday May 29. However, the hearing was postponed until Tuesday, May 30.
International Rugby Board (IRB) recommended sanctions for offences under Law 10.4 (e) carries the following three different kinds of penalties: Low End: 2 - 3 weeks, Mid Range: 5-6 weeks and Top End: 9 to 52 weeks.
Deysel appeared before the SANZAR Judicial Officer Peter Ingwersen at Durban on Tuesday. He failed to justify to the Judicial Officer regarding the umpire’s decision to show him the yellow card during the weekend’s encounter against the Waratahs. At the end of the hearing, Peter Ingwersen found Deysel guilty committing a dangerous tackle on Carter particularly when Carter was not carrying the ball.
Peter Ingwersen concluded, “this was a lower end offence and ruled that Deysel receive the minimum sanction of two weeks.” The ban comes as a major blow for the Sharks. The ruling will keep the 26-year-old Deysel out of two of the remaining three round games for the Sharks.
At the end of round 15, Sharks are placed at 5th place with 47 points courtesy of 8 wins coming from the 13 games they have played in the season so far.  Sharks are just two points behind Crusaders at the fourth place and a point and three points ahead of the sixth and seventh place Waratahs and Bulls respectively.
Sharks will be without the services of their first choice flanker Deysel in their two away games against the Cheetahs and Lions. Sharks will play against the Cheetahs and Lions on June 4 at Bloemfontein followed by an Ellis Park’s encounter against the Lions on June 11.
Deysel will be available for Sharks in their last round match against the Bulls at Pretoria on June 18.
