SANZAR’s Greg Peters displays new Super Rugby trophy for media - Super Rugby update
SANZAR (South Africa New Zealand and Australia Rugby) has showcased the new Super Rugby 2011 trophy to the media today, June 30, with the finals just around the corner.
The ongoing Super Rugby championship is in its final stages as the semi-final fixtures are kicking off on July 1. The Queensland Reds, Crusaders, Blues and Stormers are the four teams who will target the trophy.
The CEO of SANZAR, Greg Peters, told the media that the trophy will further inspire the competing teams to make it theirs. Describing the shape and structure of the trophy, he said that it has been designed keeping in mind the requirements of the tournament.
The 65cm tall trophy contains 18 kg stainless steel and it represents the colours of all three competing nations. The complex design of the trophy depicts the rough and tough nature of the game.
Greg Peters further told reporters that the best designers were hired to give the appropriate shape and an innovative touch to the cup. Describing the trophy Peters stated that, "The shape of the trophy is cantered around three curved legs, each representing
the conferences involved in the Super Rugby competition. Bold colours on each leg correspond to the conferences with gold for Australia, black for New Zealand, and green for the South African Conference.”
The CEO declared the design historical and said that it would be remembered for a long in Super Rugby and that the winner of the current Super Rugby championship will feel the difference. He also stated that, “The legs of the trophy reach upward referencing
the arms of players in a lineout, and the legs also create the shape of a rugby ball in the centre of the trophy. A new feature is the incorporation of the SANZAR logo under the base of the trophy.”
Super Rugby 15 was kicked off on February 11 this year and has remained very successful throughout the season. Although many critics disapproved of the length of this year’s season and said it would harm the performance of the players during the Rugby World
Cup 2011, many players stayed committed and played the entire season.
