SARU names Charl McLeod as replacement for Ricky Januarie in 2011 RWC provisional squad - Rugby
South African Rugby Union (SARU) has found a replacement for the French Top 14 side bound scrum half Ricky Januarie in Charl McLeod for their 2011 Rugby World Cup (RWC) provisional squad.
SARU was forced to make the replacement after Springboks international scrum half Januarie announced his retirement from international rugby. SARU brought forward the 27-year-old Charl McLeod as a fill-in for Januarie. McLeod plays as scrum half in the South
African Super Rugby Franchise Lions.
Johannesburg born McLeod has earned his place in the Springboks provisional squad for 2011 RWC after his impressive performance for Lions, particularly in the later rounds of this year’s Super Rugby championship.
McLeod will join the rest of the squad on Thursday, July 5. Earlier in the week, SARU has announced a four-day training camp that will start Thursday. Besides the training camp, it is also expected that the SARU will conduct the medical and physical fitness
test of the players to finalise their squad for the upcoming Tri Nations tournament.
SARU has clearly instructed all players named in the provisional squad to appear at the camp. However, the participation for the Stormers players is relaxed provided they win their Saturday, July 2 Super Rugby semi-final against the Crusaders.
Stormers are the only team from the South African Super Rugby conference, which are playing in the semi-finals of the Super XV championship.
