Is it just me ?

The latest must have, but how long before the LAW starts to prosecute drivers for displaying a WHITE LIGHT from rear of vehicle ?

I often wondered about those rear DVD players, too

Not only its a distraction for the driver, but at night its a hazard for the following car whom can see this illuminated screen shining

I am not a stick it the mud, but I think the POLICE will be looking for a new cash cow ?

Any thoughts ?

I was tempted to buy one, but seem to manage by common sense for where I go...

but I do see benefits if you are a service or delivery driver

  1. YES ITS JUST YOU BEING PARANOID

  2. As far as the GPS thing goes, I know the Garmin has an automatic feature to switch to night mode at dusk and back to day mode at dawn.  When in night mode is uses a black background.  My company has them in all of their vehicles.

Typically the video players are in the rear of SUV's and minivans which already have tinted rear windows.  Using the proper brightness settings, they do not shine out the back of the vehicle either.

Now as for the "distraction factor", yes, I find that the GPS, at least to me, is way more of a distraction that most other devices commonly used in a vehicle including a cell phone.

HOWEVER, I hear you screamin' about enforcement and you are probably right.  If it hasn't happened already, this certainly is something else that police could use to pull someone over for.

  3. Many people do not have your "common" sense or sense of direction. GPS is a wonderful tool to aid those who often get lost. I flew in to a unfamiliar city one year. I had written directions of how to get to my destination but lost them on the plane. The rental car place told me to get the "Never-lost" tracker and I did. What a huge help. I arrived to my destination on time and without incident. I now have GPS navigation in my SUV. What a life saver! I can go anywhere.

DVD players are good for entertaining kids in the back seat.

  4. for me sat nav  is a cost saving, i will know how to get some where, but as for night time you simply put it into a night display mode so it does not glare out

  5. You will know the directions, weather, road hazards, and the flow of traffic before you even leave your house.

You will be able to avoid traffic jams and road construction to make your vacation/journey to as smooth as possible.

Instead of waiting in the traffic you will be able to go around it. The navigation system will also allow you to look up point's of interest or popular spots that are around your destination.

  6. The nav. systems have their place. If one is on a long trip and there is an accident  the nav. system will get you around the back up. That's really great if you're in an area you don't know and don't have a "local map"  with all the small side roads.  They also generally give you GPS location. In an emergency that too is a real plus.  Some systems don't have a big picture and don't talk to you and they would be less distracting but not as helpful as you would have to pull off the road to use them.  All in all  the plusses outweigh the negatives for the GPS / nav. systems.

The DVD players are something else.  There is one in my vehicle and it has never been used.   My cat doesn't need to watch a DVD and I don't haul kids etc. who might get bored and need to be entertained.  The bright light  of the screen at night might very well be distracting not only to a following car but to the driver.   Thanks for the thought....
