SATA help with old HDD?

Now i have a new computer and it is a SATA hardrive i want to set that as a slave drive and my old hardrive as a master so i can get my old data on to my new computer how do i do this.

  1. SATA Hard Drives do not have a setting for Slave or Master so they just appear as a normal hard drive.

    All you need to do to make the old Hard Drive the master is to make sure the connector thingy on the back of the drive is set for Master and it will all work from there.


  2. Most hard drive manufacturers have software that will let you transfer the contents of the old drive to a new one. Check the website of your old drive to find the latest version.

  3. You're doing it wrong. SATA Does not use master/slave. There is only one driver per sata channel.

    That said most motherboards have sata ports and IDE ports. However, if you try to install teh old drive into the new one and set it as master your pc will try to boot off of it and it will crash because it doesn't have your new PC's drivers.

    Best to add it in as master, but set it in the bios to boot from the sata harddrive first. Then go into windows to copy data.
