We are researching this family surname - SAWELIEW/SAVELIEV & are looking for any information.

This family were supposed to be of Cossack origin. Grandparents immigrated to Western Australia in 1949 on the "Amarapoora" leaving Naples & arriving in Fremantle 19th April 1949. Anyone who knows this surname or knew this family, all information greatly appreciated.

We have done research in the National Archives, but only turn up the basics.

  2. I found several people with that name who left Europe at the same time. Most were from the town of Mstsislaw Belarus. My suggestion is that if these people were rushing out of Eastern Europe in the aftermath of the war, they may well have been "displaced persons" and could be registered with the International Red Cross. There is a unit in Baltimore MD that to this day is tracing people displaced by the war and answering questions. It is also a free service and you can contact them to see what they can find. Here's a link to the site: http://www.redcross.org/services/intl/ho...

  3. This surname sound def. Russian/Ukrainian.
