SC Freiburg’s Dirk Dufner insists Papiss Cisse could have moved to Newcastle if the price was right
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/SC-Freiburg-c40462 Sporting Director Dirk Dufner has insisted that striker Papiss Cisse could have left for English side Newcastle United if the latter had offered the right price. He stated that the offer from the Magpies was not what Freiburg had demanded which is why the transfer did not capitalize.
The Senegalese international was in huge demand in this summer’s transfer window which at least four clubs wanting to sign the striker. Newcastle United was one of the clubs in line to acquire last season’s runner-up for the highest goals in the League but failed to meet the price and sign a replacement for Andy Carroll.
Dufner admitted that Cisse would have loved the challenge to play in the Premier League and it would have been great for him financially also. He further suggested that the money would also have been great for the club but the offer may have come too late in the transfer window and there was no time to sign a possible replacement.
“Papiss would have gone there, for sure. He'd have enjoyed the challenge of playing in the English Premier League and on top of that his earnings would have moved into another dimension. And the offer Newcastle made would have been a lot of money for us,” he was quoted as saying in an interview to Bundesliga.de.
However, the Sporting Director hinted that the striker could be sold in the next summer’s transfer window. He claimed that Cisse has the qualities of a top striker and that he would be a valuable addition to any side.
“We see him every day in training and know how good he really is. So I'm absolutely certain that there will be clubs after him next summer as well. And then we can talk, for sure, if the price is right. As you know, he still has three years of his contract left to run,” he concluded.
Papiss Cisse has started this season brilliantly as well and has scored four goals in three games.
