SCG to remain home of Test cricket in NSW
In a sport where tradition and progress are jostling for position, the former has won out - at least for now – in Australia with the SCG set to hold on to Test and ODI matches played in Sydney for the next five years.
The confirmation that the long-established home of cricket in the harbour city will remain that way for the next half decade comes courtesy of the signing of a new Venue Hire Agreement between Cricket Australia, Cricket NSW and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust, which was signed earlier this week.
“The SCG is the home of cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, one of the world's two finest cricket grounds,” SCG Trust Chairman, Rodney Cavalier, said.
While there might be some Melbournians who disagree with his assessment of the situation in at least that regard, it’s hard to argue with the notion that Test and ODI matches in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 belong at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
“Test matches have been played at the SCG since 1882. That tradition will continue. The SCG is where the players want to play, where the cricket lover wants to come," Cavalier said.
The agreement ends speculation, which was ignited late last year, that the 80,000 capacity ANZ Stadium (built for the Sydney Olympics in 2000), might be in the running to host Test matches played in the state, at the time including the Sydney Ashes Test at the beginning of 2011, upon the expiry of the previous agreement with the 46,000 capacity SCG at the end of this year.
The new deal does, however, leave the door ajar for the ANZ Stadium to host Twenty20 Internationals played in NSW in the years to come.
